1. Find a parent mentor.

Everyone needs a person that they can pattern themselves after; A standard of example. Likewise for parents, this is not to do every single thing like the mentor but this is to model great and effective aspects of their parenting style into your own parenting style.

Who is your parent mentor? Is it your own parents, grandparents, favorite TV character, or friend? Maybe it is all of the above. Please list your parent mentor(s) below.

  1. Name 3 characteristics you want to pass down to your children.

Character is a distinguishing attribute that shapes our morals and values.  Character exemplifies the quality of a person.  For example, the most important character traits my mother wanted to teach me were 1) Honesty, 2) Hard Work, and 3) Strength (Independence)

What are three character building traits that you want to imprint on your children?

  1. Remember your role.

You are the parent. Until the child is 18 years old, you make all the decisions.  It is the parent‘s role to care for their children socially, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. The best way to do this is to define your role, establish and keep boundaries with your children, and provide the appropriate discipline to your children when warranted. Contrary to what others may say, children need rules and they need to be taught that there are consequences when rules are not followed.

  1. Find creative ways to show your kids you love them.

We all have a desire to be loved.  Children regardless of the age, need to be validated by their parents. This is done by studying the child, speaking positive words into his/her life, paying attention to the needs of your child (each child is different), and showing affection (hugs, kisses, smiles, helping them with their homework, giving them your undivided attention, watching movie for family night, etc.).

How do you express love to your children?
